Situated in the middle of the state to the south of Molokai and west of Maui, Lana‘i has a population just under 3000.  It is now known as the ‘Private Island’ since 98% of the 144 square mile island is owned by Lana‘i Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Castle & Cooke.

Even with many younger people migrating to the island, the plantation population has aged to the point where those over the age of 70 compose 25% of the population.

Lana‘i Community Hospital is the sole provider of emergency and hospital care for the residents and visitors of Lana’i.  With a staff of 28 people the hospital also cares for long term care residents who cannot care for themselves and do not have other community support systems to care for them.
