Inspiring Impressions of Hawaii's Secluded Island

"Polihua Beach" Oil on Linen, 16" x 20"

Lured by the Hawaiian Islands, Mike migrated from the Midwest to Lana'i to pursue his life-long passion for art and nature. His landscape and still-life paintings, which evoke a dream-like naturalism, celebrate Hawaii and invite the viewer to explore her enchanting beauty.

"Impressions in Coral and Blue" Oil on Linen, 16" x 20"
"His landscape and still-life paintings ... celebrate Hawaii and invite the viewer to explore her enchanting beauty"

Mike employs a painting technique in which he never draws on the canvas. Starting with a neutrally-toned canvas, he first depicts the subject's darkest values, then the lightest, and finally the middle tones. These are laced on the canvas very loosely, and are gradually defined over time.

Mike's main focus is to share a sense of Hawaii and its people.
"The beauty of Hawaii unfolds in large, panoramic vistas, and in the smallest, most intimate studies. If I can convey the subject's beauty, if you are able to see what drew me to paint the canvas, then I have succeeded in sharing my vision of Hawaii with you."
