As other ali‘i had done before her, Lili‘uokalani, the last Hawaiian monarch, directed that her estate be used to benefit those made most vulnerable as the old order gave way to the new. The Queen’s particular concern was for, the well being of, orphaned and destitute children and the strenthening of the traditional family system of the Hawaiians, the ‘ohana. Queen Lili‘uokalani died in 1917. The Trustees of her estate opened the first office to office to provide child welfare services in 1935. |
